The Duke of Wellington Site - at Plazawest Development
The main Archaeological excavations at the Plazawest site were successfully completed at the end of March 2007; ancillary works were completed in July 2007 after an entire month of rain delays. The painstaking process of collating the records and analysing the finds lays ahead.
Washing, sorting and sieving took place at premises set-up in Northmead during June-August 2007. Hundreds of thousands of arefacts came to light. Special thanks are due to the students and volunteers assisting.
In 2009 the the major work of cataloguing the artefact assemblage was commenced. A selection of the assemblage was sought out by the Parramatta Heritage Centre for display and interpretation in the Breaking the Shackles Exhibition (July-November 2009).
In 2010 graphic work will commence.

Lee Wharf 'C' Archaeological Works at The Honeysuckle Development Newcastle
Stay tuned for some very interesting news about AMAC's ongoing (2004-2008) work at Honeysuckle in Newcastle. Works that might have uncovered the remains of the former Bullock Island Bridge (c1870-1916) took an unexpected turn with the discovery of an IRON PADDLE STEAMER.

The LEO
A paddle steamer took its last voyage in Newcastle in c1916. It was probably involved in the reclamation works at Honeysuckle as a barge before finally being abandoned in the reclamations. Follow the links for an update on research of this surprise discovery. By close calculation of it's measurements records indicate only one contender for the unidentified vessel.
The Leo, (Official No. 65310) was constructed in Bristol in the United Kingdom in 1871 by J. Payne. It was a side wheel paddle steamer which was powered by a side lever 50 hp engine built by Wingate & Co, Glasgow, Scotland. It spent time in South Africa before coming to Newcastle in 1876.Carney 14.9.08
